Patient histories, treatments and discharges from April to June 1897, recorded by Dr. Howard Franklin Smith, assistant house surgeon at Hartford (Conn.) Hospital. Each entry included the date, patient's name, age, town, occupation, and a description of his or her ailments and treatment. Among the more unique entries is one for a man whose leg was burned. He fell asleep while intoxicated and his leg was lit on fire by one of his friends. Two entries are for men who tried to slit their throats, one because he was afraid police officers were coming to arrest him for murder. Most of the entries are for broken bones and sprains.
